8 Reasons Why You Should Drink Camel Milk

The notion of drinking camel milk may initially seem too foreign to the average American. Not long ago, I too would have categorized myself as one of those people. After a quick sweep of the internet and some light reading I came to the realization that this stuff may actually be the answer to an extensive amount of holes in the alternative dairy market. People seem to be trending toward the whole organic, non-gmo, paleo-approve movement, which calls for high demands in regards to what is behind the products consumed. Although there’s plenty of companies and supplements that have emerged victorious, claiming they fit the strict criteria, there’s not always a way to know for certain.

Growing up I always came home to a cold gallon of cow’s milk in the fridge, because that’s what we were accustomed to buying. Though, as time pursued I began to see the dairy shelf at the local grocery expand exponentially, and I came to understand why. The alternative dairy segment has been taking off at a massive pace, and, at times, I have followed the trend myself. I have had the occasional glass of almond milk, and tried adding some silk milk to my cereal, in order to truly understand what the hype is all about. Honestly, I didn’t get what I was looking for. For one, the taste just wasn’t appealing to me. Additionally, the nutritional value of most alternative products available is nowhere near comparable to cow’s milk.

Given my findings, there’s a couple factors I came to understand. Health enthusiasts and workout fanatics certainly want something different, nutritious, and edgy. Also, a fair amount of people get major allergic reactions to the high lactose levels  in cow’s milk. Yet overall,  these alternatives don’t provide the nutrition that 2% or whole milk maintains. That’s when I came across the benefits of camel milk. I know it may sound odd, but it’s a fantastic alternative, and I’ll tell you why.

Contains an incredible amount of vitamins. Camel milk is 3-5 times higher in immune boosting Vitamin C than cow’s milk.

It’s the closest thing to mother’s milk. No other milk comes as close to providing the nutrients that humans need. In fact, many nomads used camel’s milk to treat malnourished children.

No proven side effects. Researchers have yet to find any downside to the consumption of camel milk. I have yet to find anyone who experienced an allergic reaction.

The lactoferrin power. Lactoferrin, a naturally occurring iron-binding protein, is an antioxidant that protects against infections. It  provides antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory agents. Camel milk contains up to 10x higher volume of lactoferrin than cow’s milk.

Positive environmental impact. Recent studies have shown cow’s can produce negative effects on our environment, due to methane excretion and land requirement. Fortunately, camels do not. They survive on very little water and food for long periods of time. Therefore, camels require less grazing area and maintain a much lower environmental impact.

The iron content is outrageous. Camel milk is an excellent source of antioxidants and is 5 times higher in Iron than cow’s milk.

There’s plenty of calcium. There's up to 25% more calcium in camel milk than traditional cow milk.

There’s no substantial difference in taste. The taste closest to cow’s milk of any other alternative milk. It provides a slightly sweeter profile, but nowhere near overbearing. Kids seem to love it!

Overall, camel milk is incredible, in every regard. If you can live with paying a little extra for all the benefits provided, it’s a no brainer. It’s paleo approved, non-gmo, no hormones and additive-free. I’m not sure what’s not to love about it. I certainly am convinced.
